Embossing, Debossing and Hot Foiling
To Emboss is to physically raise areas of the card stock and to Deboss is to physically lower areas of the card stock, both changing the depth/shape of the board. These impressions can either complement artwork, or be utilised as a contrast to the artwork.
Hot Foiling is similar, but rather than changing the depth/shape of the board, it embeds a foil into the board. This foil can be metallic, holographic or solid & transparent colours in nature and can also be utilised along with Embossing and Debossing for superior rich and delicate embellishing.
All these processes are executed post printing and, where applicable, lamination, but prior to gluing, folding and assembling.
As far as the disc printing itself is concerned, we can utilise the metallic nature of the CD to produce similar effects to foiling. When ordering we will discuss the choice of a silver base (the natural CD reflective effect), or a white base, where we lay a full base of white and then apply your artwork over the top to appear solid and as if printed on paper or card stock.
The middle ground here is a part white base, where you can utilise some of the metallic nature of the disc, but hide the rest using a custom screen print. For example, you could have the disc base with white ink, except for your title area, then any print over the title area will become metallic. Leave empty for silver, or use yellow to achieve a metallic gold finish in the title area. This could then match to a hot foil on the sleeve packaging making an Abba Gold standard release.
Unfortunately, we cannot Emboss or Deboss a physical disc, but we can use UV spot gloss for shallow raised areas, felt under thumb.
